When looking for a Portuguese Water Dog
It is important to learn all you can about the breed.
Like other breeds, the PWD does have some hereditary health issues.
Our dogs health testing includes OFA certification (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, Optigen (for Progressive Retinol Athrophy). yearly CERF (canine eye registration foundation, to test for all eye problems.) GM-1 (for storage disease) and JDCM (Juvenile Dilated Cardiomyopathy). We are now testing for improper coats and any other tests that come available for the betterment of the health of this breed.
GROOMING
The Portuguese Water Dog should be brushed and combed regularly. Primarily coat type does not determine which trim they are put in. It is a personal preference. Two coat clips are used: one clip with the face and rear shaved, and the working retreiver or pet clip where the dog is scissored so the coat appears to be about an inch long all over.
This breed is virtually hypo-allergenic and good for allergy sufferers. The coat shed little or no hair. the coat grows more slowly then that of a poodle and does not require as frequent scissoring or clipping.
Since Corky's retirement from dog grooming, our daughter Jobie has continued servicing his clients. She is
"Corky The Canine Clipper's Kid"
